Other Suffrage Activities: Along with her husband Mr William Garrard, Mary Anne was a Chartist and had founded the Ipswich Working Men's Association in the 1840s. Her husband was known locally as the 'Ipswich Chartist'. Chartism was a working class, politically radical reform movement. Chartists had already petitioned the Houses of Parliament in earlier decades, demanding the extension of the vote to working men, many of whom were also disenfranchised.
