Additional Information: Zoe went to a WSPU meeting with her sister in 1911 and, from that moment on, was devoted 'to the Cause'. She ran the library inside the WSPU's shop in Chelsea. She took part in the window-smashing raid in 1912, having heard Christabel Pankhurst's speech inciting women to take part. Zoe concealed a small hammer inside a muff (a furry hand warmer), pulled it out at the last moment and broke a window. She was sentenced to six weeks in prison. She continued to work in the Chelsea shop during the war. She also became a member of the Independent WSPU (a breakaway group from the WSPU) and of the Church League for Women's Suffrage (CLWS). Zoe gave an account of some of her experiences in her autobiography, Life and Yesterday (1960).
