Additional Information: Charlotte was from Rochdale but travelled down to London to take part in a raid on the House of Commons, where women jumped out of the back of removal vans at the last minute so that they could rush in without being stopped. She spent one week in Holloway Prison before her employers, for whom she worked as a 'nurse domestic', paid for her release. Her employer was John Bright, a member of the political Bright family, who described himself as 'weak kneed' over the women's suffrage issue. Charlotte's imprisonment led him to complain about her treatment. His wife Edith and their daughter Helen subsequently became involved with the Rochdale branch of the North of England Society for Women's Suffrage. Charlotte was working class so she was accused of being influenced by Edith and Helen to take part in the raid, which she vociferously denied. Were Edith and Helen Bright more likely influenced by Charlotte's bravery?
