Elizabeth Crawford, The Women's Suffrage Movement: A Reference Guide 1866?1928 (1999)
Family information: Daughter of Hilda Brackenbury and sister to Marie Brackenbury, both suffrage campaigners.
Additional Information: Georgina subscribed to the NUWSS in 1907 and 1908, during which time she also joined the WSPU (1907). She was arrested in 1908 after taking part in a WSPU 'raid' on the House of Commons, as was her sister Marie Brackenbury. She was sentenced to six weeks in Holloway Prison. She spent the rest of 1908 giving talks about the importance of women's suffrage across Britain and in Germany. In 1910, she took a role as organiser in Manchester, and was imprisoned for one month in 1912 after taking part in the WSPU's window-smashing campaign. She was also, with her sister Marie, a supporter of the Women's Tax Resistance League (WTRL) and a member of the International Women's Franchise Club. In 1927, her talents as an artist were called upon to paint a portrait of WSPU leader Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst, which now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. She was also a pallbearer at Mrs Pankhurst's funeral. The Brackenbury family home was infamous for giving shelter to suffragette prisoners temporarily released under the 'Cat and Mouse Act', and was known as 'Mouse Castle'. See Hilda Brackenbury.
