Further Information:

Family information: Parents were shoemakers and binders.

Other Suffrage Activities: Maria likely became a teacher, like many working class girls, through the pupil-teacher system. She became a member of the London Association of Schoolmistresses and ran a day school for ladies. Later she taught at Denmark Hill Grammar School for Boys, and was involved with the Working Women's College (as an Associate) and with the National Home Reading Union, helping children from less privileged backgrounds improve their reading. Maria had clearly not forgotten her roots.
