Further Information:

Family information: Rachel's mother took over the family shoe business when her father died in 1860. She had five brothers and sisters.

Additional Information: After signing the suffrage petition, Rachel went on to take over the family shoe business when her mother died in 1882. She ran a shoe warehouse in Eastbourne, describing herself as a shoe dealer when she retired to Devon. By then living with her niece Ada, the two filled in the 1911 census form together. Her niece scrawled across the form 'Being unenfranchised filled in under protest' ? a defiant gesture and a personal way of recognising, although not fully taking part in, the suffrage census protest organised by militant societies like the WSPU and the WFL that year.
